Volker Braun 'Die Leguane' - Iguanas

Volker Braun 'Die Leguane' a film by Alina Cyranek. And here's my english version from Rubble Flora (Seagull, 2014)

IGUANAS

They idle here amongst the grey remains
Of ruined temples, languid, undismayed.
From time to time the flicker of an eye!
Stone-grey the body and rough as stone,
But swift the legs and with a sudden bound
It’s back to business, snapping at a fly.

We the iguanas, creatures of a coming age,
Camped in the crumbling citadels of finance
We watch the banks’ collapse in total silence.
Not the slightest laughter, not a hint of rage.
And power, time? They rot and fall away
And the sun just rises on another day.
