“The Politics and Aesthetics of Relationality in Contemporary German-Language Culture”

28th January 2022 to 29th January 2022
UCD Humanities Centre, Dublin

The third of three upcoming events:

Our workshop aims to explore this shift away from the fantasy of the sovereign self towards the relational self, a form of subjectivity that arises from environmental interdependencies and modes and scales of implication. The present era of chronic crises sharply accentuates the need for alternative networks and models of solidarity and care. The cultural sphere is at the forefront of challenging obsolete ideals of productivity and self-growth, imagining instead new possibilities of solidarity and empathy. Examining how German-language artists, intellectuals and writers critique the hegemonic tendencies of capitalism and their own implication (Rothberg, 2019) in systemic injustice, the workshop also aims to consider the re-politicisation of contemporary artistic and cultural output.

This workshop in Dublin promises insight into literature and community and I shall be presenting on Ulrike Almut Sandig and her politica and aesthetics of community: Wir waren hier!
